Buzznet's Anime Queen Reviews Soul Eater(Anime Review #3)

Hey everyone! Buzznet's Anime Queen here bringing you another anime review! this time for an anime called Soul Eater!

Before i give you a synopsis/summary for it,let me just say don't let the title fool you. I know Soul Eater sounds like it would be disturbing and scary but actually its not that bad! Moving on.

Episodes: 51 Status: Finished Airing Aired: Apr 7, 2008 to Mar 30, 2009(Manga still publishing though!) Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy,Fantasy, Shounen, Supernatural Duration: 24 min. per episode Rating: PG-13 - Teens 13 or older Synopsis:Set in the Shinigami technical school for weapon meisters, the series revolves around 3 groups of each a weapon meister and a human weapon. Trying to make the latter a "Death Scythe" which is the highest title for a weapon and thus fit for use by the Shinigami, they must collect the souls of 99 evil humans and 1 witch.

Maka & Soul Eater, Black Star & Tsubaki, and Death the Kid with Patty and Liz Thompson are the characters Soul Eater revolves around. Besides taking the time to gather souls, these students of Shibusen defend Death City from some of the most powerful of creatures while still attending school and trying to become stronger.(from myanimelist.net)

Well there you go. Soul Eater is about a the DWMA(Death Weapon Meister Academy) trying to stop the Kishin(God of madness if you will) and witches.

To start off the show is VERY halloween ish. You have witches,black cats,grim reapers,a mad scientist,werewolves,zombies and demons. That alone makes it very unique and fun watch. Shinigami(Lord Death in the english version) is the grim reaper that runs the DWMA and is training new meisters(humans that wield weapons) to fight the kishin(or anyone falling down the dark road). Their ultimate goal is to make their weapons a death scythe(weapon of Shinigami). To do this they must "Feed" their weapon 99 kishin egg souls(souls of humans that have commited horrible crimes like murder) and 1 witch soul.  This is pretty much the goal of season 1. Season 2 is where the series instead focuses on defeating the kishin. I'm not a big fan of the ending,but I suppose i'll have to live with it,suck it up and read the manga.

Characters

Now if i sit here and name off all the important characters,this review will become a novel. So i'm just going to name the three "main" characters and their weapons.

Maka Albarn and Soul Eater Evans. Maka is a scythe meister and Soul is her scythe(literally he's a scythe) Maka's mother was also a scythe meister and although you never see her,Maka idolizes her. You do however see Maka's father whose a death scythe(Maka's mother turned her ex husband into a death by accomplishing the requirements mentioned earlier.) Maka's goal in life is to be as great as her mother and Soul's is to be COOL. You never see his parents(or hear about them for that matter) but he's a pretty nicely developed character and funny. He's a teenage boy that gets flustered around pretty girls(maka is not one of these) but its obvious the two of them care about eachother and therefor i say SHIP!

Black Star and Tsubaki. Black Star is an assasian and Tsubaki is his weapon. She can be a sword,a smoke bomb,and a chain scythe(or however you say it). Black Star has a goal to stand out and trancend God. Black Star is very in-your-face and LOUD. Tsubaki is more reserved and quiet hence making them a perfect team.

Last but not least we have Death The Kid and his twin pistol weapons Liz and Patty Thompson.Now as his name implies Death the Kid is the son of Lord Death. Kid LOVES symmentry and looses it at things that arent symmentrical. It's cost him a few battles(yes his hair isnt symmentrical,he's tried to dye it before). That's why he uses two guns. Liz and Patty are off the streets and Kid is a spoiled,rich brat. Patty is younger but she's usually the one that convince Kid to move his ass when hes freaking out. Liz is older and deathly afraid of ghosts and many other things.

One of the things I loved the most about soul eater was that it took a scary cliche figure(Grim Reaper) and made him funny and affectionate towards his son. The halloween theme of the show is unique.

Overall Soul Eater is definately worth a watch. I give it an A-.
